Antihero was launched in 1995 by Julien Stranger. As Julien said: “It was Jim Thiebaud and Tommy Guerrero’s idea. They came to me about doing something, and it was the furthest thing from my mind at that point. I’ll be totally honest: I was over having a board with my name on it right when they came to me. It sounded cool to me to be able to do something with my friends, and so I was into it because of that”. Antihero is also known as “Rebel Yell”, but the name “anti-hero” is just a literary term for the types of characters that aren’t really conventional. But as far as using it for a skateboard company Julien does’t know how they settled on it …“probably some night in the Uptown bar”. The most notable rider of Antihero was Bob Burnquist, who turned pro for Antihero, but left the company in 1999.
