World Industries was founded in 1987 by professional freestyle skateboarder Steve Rocco. He was kicked off the Sims Skateboards company team and then he bought 500 skateboards from Skip Engblom of the skateboard company Santa Monica Airlines. Steve teamed up with John Lucero of Black Label and together rented a warehouse. Lucero finished their collaboration in three weeks after beginning. Steve Rocco became partner with Rodney Mullen. World Industries was originally called SMA World Industries but later they cut the first bit off of the name and became just plain World Industries. Soon became the birth of Devil Man, Flameboy and Wet Willy. This helped them break out and finally become the biggest brand out there. World Industries was sold in July 2002 to Globe International Limited and then on June 25, 2007, Globe International Limited sold World Industries to i.e. Distribution. In 2007, Australian filmmaker Mike Hills released The Man Who Souled the World, a documentary about Steve Rocco and the creation of World Industries.
